My Study Group

You know what one of the best things about this place is….Well, ya, the profs are great, so is the infrastructure…..but what truly amazes me are the people here !!! Yep, me talking about my batch mates. With the entire batch being divided into 4 sections, you really don’t get to know everyone closely. The people you interact with the most are your study group mates, your dorm mates and your section mates. In the first term, the study groups were formed by the PGP office. However, in further terms, one was free to chose the group one wanted to. My group initially was a five member group, including me and in the second term, another guy joined us.

Let me start with the lady first. She also happens to be the CR of our class. A commerce graduate from Chennai. Worked for a couple of years before coming here. One of the few girls (or perhaps the only) in the country to have converted all 6 IIMs. A very confident and no-nonsense girl, who is never afraid to speak her mind. Being the CR is not an easy job and she has handled the post extremely well so far. A very caring person at heart and a great pal to hang around with, she is a great team player, always willing to shoulder responsibilities. In fact, she sorts of binds our group together when we at times get lax and brings us back on track.

Next is a guy from IIIT Hyderabad. A 99.99 percentiler with a keen knack in finanace, I-Banks are where he belongs to and am so gald that’s where he is heading for in his summers. A topper during his earlier years, he is one scholar with a high ambition and is certainly a person to go to when all the finance and accounts jargon goes above your head. A person who is always enthu to discuss and debate about any topic under the sun and is also candid enough to accept views contrary to his.

Then comes this musical bond from IIT kgp. An exceptional piano/guitar player, he sure set the stage alive by his performances during the T-Nites. And had he not been at WIMWI, I am sure some rock band or the other would have welcomed him with open arms. With his boyish charms and cool persona, he sure is one fun guy to hang out with. One of the toppers of the ABM course, but a very down to earth personality, he sure does rock. Soemone you are always at ease with.

This guy is one of those different and controversial persons you at times meet. A Mech engg, he is the senior most person in the group with a 4 odd years experience at a huge automobile company. And the insight he brings into discussions coz of this experience is immense. I said controversial as lots of his ideas and analysis are out of the box and revolutionary, that often create a stir and sound weird but are often very insightful. I am amazed by his GK, right from Metallica to Russian Revolution….and none of us could match the number of hours he spents with books in the first term, he hardly would sleep I guess.

Last, but certainly not the least, is this don from IIT Delhi. He joined our group in the second term and boy, were we lucky or what !! With an enriching work ex in an infrastructure major, he is in the race to be one of the I-Schols at WIMWI (That’s what the toppers are called here, Industry Scholars) But the best thing is that he is not at all the mugging kinds. He is sleeping everytime u call him and still ends up getting A’s in every subject. A very caring person at heart, a jolly self at parties and a good sportsman ( I could hardly pick his service in TT the first time I played himJ ), he sure is one of the most talented persons I have met. And yeah, he is god at report writing, getting A in WAC is no kids play. A great team player, compromising and understanding.

We all have a great time whenever we have group meets. I agree, we often do actual constructive work for less than 30-40 % of the time and the rest of the time is spent in discussing and chatting about anything under the sun, right from who our first crushes were to whether Bombay is better or Delhi !! But that’s the whole fun. That’s what keep us going as group. Thats what ensures we all are at complete ease with each other and consequently, not only do well as a study group, but also make pals for a lifetime. It’s a super experience to spend so much time with such an awesome bunch of people. They all are so diverse, so talented, so intelligent, so assiduous, yet so caring , so much fun, helpful and down to earth. Every single moment I spend with them is a time for immense learning for me. There’s always something new to learn and enjoy being in such great company, and that’s what makes WIMWI so very special !

2nd term is over

Here I am, in pune, sitting in the closed confines of my comfortable abode. But you know what, this time I will be kind of eager to go back to campus. And that’s primarily coz of how the 2nd term went by.

It was pretty much unlike how the first term was. We had lesser number of subjects this term. So yes, the load was slightly less. Before the mid terms, we were busy in summer placements preparation. So many presentations, so many versions of the CV…but all that was kind of fun, better than sitting and mugging for the subjects at least. Post mid term, placements started and there was a break of about 10 days from the classes. After that, confluence happened that again took 3-4 days. And by the time it ended, we had started to enjoy the surprisingly lesser load that we had. We had more time to spend on things apart from academics now. Mind you though, the load was still very much there. In fact, at one point in time, we had 7 quizzes in 10 days. However, compared to what we had been through in the first term, this was much better. We had inter section sports going on, lots of parties and treats, club activities and what not ! We all had become very accustomed to the academic load and could now manage our time to do lots of extra stuff. I still remember one weekend, where we had a Saturday off, the only Saturday in the term where we had an off. On Friday night, I played, watched movies and slept early. Got up late on Saturday morning, went out of campus with a friend, came back late, had a party with my group mates, again went out for dinner with all of them, came back late in the night, surfed the net and slept well late into Sunday morning. Agreed, Sunday was spent in doing a marketing assignment, but the way I spent the weekend really thrilled me and I cherished it a lot.

So essentially, we were pretty much chilled out this term. People spent time in watching movies, playing, going out with friends, or simple plain old sleeping !!! But whatever it was, it was a good break from the regular acads. And probably that’s why we were in a fix at the time of end-terms when we realized theres lots of catching up to do. But from our experience, I guess we all managed that pretty well in the end too. So all in all, a great term where at least I enjoyed being in WIMWI a lot.

It was a special term in some aspects. One being that finally MANAC (Management Accounting) is over ! Yahooooo…..No longer will we have to see the dreaded MANAC quiz notice on that dreaded quiz notice board. The only time we will see MANAC quiz notice again will be when the next fachchas are here and we will be the kings. Ha ha ha !!!!! The term also had ISPE, a subject about Indian Social and Political environment, where we were sensitized to the society we live in and where we all did projects that would in some way or the other help the society and the under-privileged. We also had some great insightful debates in the ISPE classes about sensitive topics and the passion involved was for everyone to see. We were taught Marketing by a prof who has co-authored the famous Kotler book and needless to say, all his lectures are simply god level. We were taught Spoken Business Communication pre mid term where our presentations were video recorded at the end to make us realize we are not really the studs that we think we are !!!

They say the third term is equally tough as the first one and after the chill 2nd term, we all are gonna face a super stressful time again. But I am enjoying WIMWI thoroughly and am ready for anything to come at me now. As they say, Bring ‘em on !!!!
